Dawnleaf Watches WATAMOTE ~No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys Fault I’m Not Popular!~: Episode 1 – Death Mouse

There is a scene in this anime which plays like one from Death Note, except instead of Light murdering people, it’s a high school girl looking up how to pick up men.  It’s the one that sold me on this show, I think.

Oh, and the opening.  It legitimately surprised me.  Besides the one from Servant x Service, I didn’t really like any opening songs this season that much.  Some were decent, but I didn’t love any of them.   But this slice of life anime about an unpopular girl’s opening is badass!  Rather unexpected, that.  I could probably listen to this song for twenty minutes and get just as much (if not more) enjoyment out of that than I could watching an actual episode of one of the more disposable shows this season.  Here's a video:

Our main character is Kuroki, a girl who has no friends and is completely incapable of handling social situations, finding it almost impossible to talk to people who aren’t her family.  And she’s insane.

Hating her pitiful existence, she decides that she will now approach integrating herself into society with enthusiasm.  And get a boyfriend.

Those crazy eyes.  I’m not sure if I should be terrified of them or not.
This show’s humor isn’t the typical 4-koma sort of thing we’ve been seeing a lot this season.  Instead, it’s a lot more mean and poking fun at how much of an outcast/psycho Kuroki is.  And it’s actually pretty funny, all things considered, albeit it can be a bit uncomfortable.

However, this show does a good job (in my opinion) of not only being funny, but making me like Kuroki.  Her personality is so extreme that every moment she spends on screen is both extremely memorable and somewhat painful to watch at times.  I kind of want her to get a boyfriend before the killings start, and I kind of am scared for him for when that happens.

The harder she tries, the uglier she looks.  However, she should learn that the duckface thing is so 2012.

She has a brother, too.  And he also has raccoon eyes!  I guess it’s hereditary, and not just a result of playing otome games all day.  Unless… naaah.

And, since I have a sibling and understand how it works, I always have to give props to an anime that actually understands how they work.  Because this one does, so much.  He’s rude to her but not too rude, just sort of constant low-level dickishness.  However, he agrees to help her out because he knows how much of a wreck she is.

Her voice actress also has some awesome line deliveries.  One ‘Sayonara’ was almost on the same level of awesomeness of the ‘Ahoooooo~’ chick from The World God Only Knows.  Yeah, you heard that.  I’m standing by what I said.

Ouran flashbacks, anyone?
I will say, this show is not the genderswapped The World God Only Knows I imagined.  In fact, I honestly can’t think of a solid comparison to this show’s psycho protagonist.  And that’s a good thing, I think.  Keima was perfectly happy with no friends.  Not only is Kuroki unhappy, she also believes that it's everyone else's fault.

Looking forward to more desperate attempts to pick up guys next episode.  Please tell me there’s an episode where she tries cringe-worthy pick-up lines!
