Dawnleaf Watches il sole penetra le illusioni ~ Day Break Illusion: Episode 2 – The Morning After

This is going to be like Dog & Scissors, isn’t it?  Not bad enough to drop, but nothing amazing.
Episode 2 was devoted to explaining the world.  Basically, what the magical girls fight are Daemonia, which are demons that humans with darkness in their hearts (or something like that) contract with.  The Daemonia claim to grant a wish of theirs’, and, in return, after it’s granted, the human/Daemonia combo go on a killing rampage.

Chains, much?
This is a good season for Pandora Hearts references, isn’t it?  I swear, that show isn’t just on my mind, those of you who have seen it will know what I mean when I compare the baddies in this to Chains.  And Pandora Hearts is awesome enough to be talked about, even if the ending was shit.

Now, our main character is going to a sort of magical girl school which is absolutely nothing like Hogwarts.  Instead, it’s basically a regular school that occasionally sends the girls on missions to some sort of… alternate dimension?  Not sure.  Well, anyway, they fight Daemonia there.

We learn about that pile of confusing regarding Akari’s cousin.  Apparently, they (‘they’ being the folks in charge of this Daemonia hunting business) erased her from everyone’s memories, so that no one would go into despair and be ripe pickings for another Daemonia.  When Akari hears about this, she isn’t happy at all.

I always give a show props for trying to be a bit more dark/serious than expected, as that helps it distance itself from other magical girl anime coming out this season (Looking at you, Fate/kaleid liner and Fantasista Doll).  However, being dark/serious doesn’t work as well if I don’t really care about the characters.  Akari despairing about how she killed her cousin doesn’t hit home when I don’t like her that much yet.  She’s not bad, just a touch… bland?

Basically, my decision is that I’m going to keep watching this, as I enjoy the fight scenes and this anime’s attempts to be dark.  However, if it starts to bore me, I’ll probably drop it.
