Dawnleaf Watches Vampire Knight: Episode 3 – Zero Doesn’t Act Like A Raging Tsundere!

Worst episode ever.

We get more explanations this episode.  Apparently, there are several different classes of vampires in this universe.  We have the hot bishies/bishoujos, who make up most of the vampiric cast.

We have the Level E (*hums*) vampires, who apparently have lost all emotion and humanity and hunt human blood based on pure instinct.  They also give me Fullmetal Alchemist flashbacks for some reason.  I’m not exactly if they’re insinuating if Level E vampires are the result of something happening to a regular vampire or if they’re just ‘born’ that way.  They’re also creepier than the other two classes, so they’re probably my favorite.

Then, we have the purebloods.  Apparently, they have the ability to transform people into vampires, but no one else does (um, what?  So, the bishie vampires can’t transform people?  If purebloods are rare, then how are there so many vampires?  Is vampirism a genetic thing?  Is that it?).  Their X-men powers are also superior to the X-men powers of the bishie vampires.  Don’t despair, though.  Even though I made the distinction between ‘purebloods’ and ‘bishies’, we still get a pureblood bishie: Kaname.  Who I still don’t like, but I’ll get to that later.

So, the thing with Zero is that he’s been bitten by a pureblood vampire.  Okay, that doesn’t really teach us much that we didn’t already know (I already knew that he was turning into a vampire).  When the class E vampires were being set up, I got all hopeful that he was going to become one (which would be both one hell of an interesting twist and would explain why he’s been desperately avoiding his vampiric urges), but my dreams were dashed with the final revelation of the end of this episode.

Ding ding!  Ladies and gents, Zero’s finally a vampire!  And a remarkably un-Level-E-ish one, sadly.  Took the fellow four years, but we finally are achieving suction.  And Yuuki knows, too.  How?  Well, he went after her first!  It seems rather early to have him be sucking out her bodily fluids already, but it’s happened.  That totally counts as first base

So, what happened on Yuuki’s front?  Well, she proves herself to be the anime queen of parkour, and then gets attacked by an unarmed child.  Of course, he kicks her ass, and she needs someone to come in and save her.

She also mentions that she has a deep-rooted fear of vampires (because of her traumatic memories), so I guess that maybe this may explain a bit of why she’s so helpless whenever one so much as pokes her in the shoulder.  However, if she’s terrified of vampires, why the hell did the headmaster think it was a good idea to put her in charge of supervising them, especially if their skirmishes often get violent?  He seems to be one of those characters who acts goofy but actually is very smart and competent when things get serious (Like Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist).

On the headmaster, he still steadily remains my favorite character.  He makes Zero and Yuuki a nice breakfast at the beginning of the episode, and they act rude and awkward respectively.  I have no idea what everyone’s thing against the man is, I think he’s awesome.  He’s over-the-top, but in a good way.  He obviously cares about the both of them a lot, so I have no idea why they (Well, mostly Zero) seem to dislike him.  We also learn that he used to be a vampire hunter.  Why the hell isn’t this anime about that?  Imagine it.  The tale of Headmaster Cross fighting vampires with holy water spewed from his tear ducts and being an adorably overbearing daddy on the side.  Oh, and he would carry pictures of them everywhere, and he would subdue the vampires by making them fall asleep by cheerfully telling them stories about how wonderful Yuuki is doing on her standardized tests.  And he would make them delicious meals, and then secretly slip garlic in them.   Now, that would be amazing.

Okay, on to a character that I don’t like: Kaname.  He remains rather dull.  Basically the only trait of his that I can really pick up on is that he likes Yuuki, and is a bit possessive of her.  The big revelation about him this episode (well, not really, it was mentioned earlier that he was a pureblood, but we learn what that actually means now) isn’t really news to me, because the major difference between purebloods and bishies is that purebloods can transform humans into vampires, which is something that I assumed all vampires did.  And he’s a pureblood.

I guess that this could be a conflict later.  If he has a desire to bite Yuuki, there could be major problems.  Actually, now that I think of it, Yuuki doesn’t really seem to care about becoming a vampire.  When the possibility was suggested to her a little while ago, she basically did the equivalent of shrugging her shoulders and saying ‘So what?  I would still be able to be in the disciplinary committee and protect the students'.  But, if she really is scared of vampires, why would she be fine with becoming one?  Why does she even want to be in the disciplinary committee?

On the topic of questions, another one that I forgot to mention previously popped into my head.  Why can these vampires go in the sunlight?  The Level E vampires were wearing heavy clothing.   Was it because they were avoiding the sun, or just because they were disguising themselves?  If they have no humanity left, how would they be smart enough to know to disguise themselves/protect themselves from the sun?  However, even if the Level E vampires were hiding from the sunlight, the bishies and Kaname seem just fine with going out in the sunlight in just their uniforms.  They spend most of their time outside at night, sure, but they seem perfectly fine when they’re greeting the fangirls.

(anyone else having flashbacks?)
I guess that’s just one part of the lore they’re skipping over.  I guess I can’t really hate on them too much for that, because creative license and all that.

Okay, so, hopefully, in the next episode, Kaname and Zero will get into a sissy fight because Kaname’s pissed that Zero sucked out her bodily fluids first, the headmaster will become the main character, and the anime will detail his evil vampire-fighting adventures with a newly competent Yuuki as his female sidekick and Zero as the Big Bad.  A girl can dream, can’t she?

Someone’s a little… rape-y.
