Dawnleaf Watches Blood Lad: Episode 1

Since Blood Lad has a vampire in it, it is my obligation to mention Twilight in this:  Screw Edward Cullen.  This show has real vampires.  Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to present Staz.  The vampire otaku.

If the phrase ‘vampire otaku’ doesn’t make you instantly fall in love with this show, don’t worry.  There are plenty of other things to like.
Okay, let’s get on to the plot of this episode.  We meet a main character who does have eyes, Staz the vampire otaku.  He lives in a demon world.  However, he is completely obsessed with the human world (yes, there is a demon world and a human world.  Blue Exorcist, anyone?).   Thus, he flips out when he gets a phone call from one of his demon acquaintances saying that there’s a human girl wandering around.  Staz insists that they take her to his house so he can meet her.

Staz fusses around, like he’s the world’s biggest nerd getting ready for a date with the writers of Star Trek.  It is pretty silly and entertaining to watch.   When she gets to his room, he immediately begins asking her questions about manga, video games, etc. from the human world.

Haha, that’s what she said.
*coughs* Umm… Moving on, he gets a phone call talking about how some guy wants to take over his territory with giant carnivorous flowers.  Yeah, did I mention?  Staz is apparently the leader of a territory of the demon world.  Like, he has people working for him and people trying to murder him.  It’s like a gang war.  I’m just surprised that this:

is in a position of power.  I bet that means he has some supreme asskicking powers, right?  Yes, he does.  He easily takes out Mr. Flower Power.

However, when Staz was out kicking ass, one of the plants wandered off and ate the human girl.  Apparently, when humans die in the human world, they turn into ghosts.  Which are tangible, apparently.  So, the girl is now a ghost.

Staz vows to un-ghostify her, even though he has no clue how to do it.  And she’s naked now, by the way.  And very shiny, too.  After this, she shows him how she got into the human world, and they decide that they’re going there.  Together, of course. Staz wants to see if Dirty Princess:4 is out yet.

However, as of the end of this episode, they’re not there yet. And I almost don’t want them to go to the human world, honestly.  Because the demon world looks like a blast!  Everything is colorful and bright, the demons have fun designs, and the delightfully weird is commonplace!  Oh, well.

I really liked this episode, if you couldn't already tell.  By far, the worst part of the episode was the fact that Viz’s subtitles were timed badly.   This show definitely has personality, and it’s the same fun, quirky personality that shows like Soul Eater have.  I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout the episode, even if it was at someone just being over-the-top.  But I’m pretty sure that’s intentional.
Blood Lad definitely doesn’t take itself too seriously, but that’s part of the fun.  Even the fanservice didn’t piss me off like it usually does!  Everything here is goofy and fun, and I can’t honestly hate on fanservice too much when it’s like that.
The characters are shaping up to be quite the fun cast, and I already love every moment Staz is onscreen.  The girl is nice, too.  She’s showing signs of having personality, too, even if most of the stuff that she did this episode was acclimatizing to what was going on.
The animation isn’t exactly amazing, but is quite enjoyable with the colors and something always going on to keep your attention.  It’s very energetic, is what I’m saying.

I’m definitely looking forward to episode 2.  I just hope that the weirdly timed subtitles here were just a fluke with my computer and that I’ll never encounter them again.
(by the way, Team Staz FTW!)
