You see, the promo art is desperately trying to get guys to watch this, because it’s almost an upskirt shot.
Now, unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot for me to say about this anime, even after watching an episode. Considering that this season has a ton of shows coming out for me to be excited about watching (See: Ping Pong, Captain Earth, Black Bullet), shows that will probably be terrible (See: Dragonar Academy, Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara), or even shows that I have no idea what to expect (See: Gokukoku no Brynhildr, Mekaku City Actors), I had a pretty good handle on what this was going to be. Fine. And that’s what it seems to be, at least from watching this episode. Unfortunately, that’s not the most interesting blogging material. Writing about a show that’s basically functional (or even good) is much less interesting to talk about than a show that’s uniquely terrible or one that completely subverted your expectations.
This piece of work was brought to us by Pierrot, a studio that hasn't really made much to get excited over (unless you’re a long-running shounen fan, which I am not) and is also producing another show this season (Baby Steps), which means that the money will likely dry up quicker. Having said that, this show doesn't look… that bad. The animation’s by no means impressive, but I guess I've seen worse. A very good indicator of that is this show’s OP, which is pretty boring and only shows one character throughout the whole thing.
Throughout this episode, it seems like the camera only really likes focusing on the main character and most of the people in the background are just hastily drawn with cartoony faces and expressions. The music’s mostly orchestral stuff, which I admit is fitting to the setting (which is light medieval times/fantasy) but not impressive. The OP and ED songs are nothing special at all. Skip ‘em.
Our main character, who I believe is the only one who we've really been introduced to (and isn't a one-off character) is not the typical shoujo ‘nice girl who just stands around being pretty and doesn't do anything’ but instead the typical shoujo ‘brash tomboyish girl who fights and makes sure to act un-feminine’. Admittedly, I like the active lead more than the passive one, but I do think that the main girl was kind of annoying and rather dumb in this. I really enjoyed the girl in Noragami, and compared to her, this one just seems lacking.
Perhaps the strongest point of this anime (to me, anyway) is that it just had a different feel from most of the other stuff in its genre. It has a doofier tone than most of its fellow shoujo, and it definitely has personality. This may have the potential to be good, but, if you’re tired of the old ‘princess who isn’t princess-ey’ trope (and I guess the ‘arranged marriage’ trope, too), then steer clear.
Sorry for the non-funny of this post, but I just don’t have much to say about this one for now.
